Decent Jobs Encouraging Women's Participation in Non-Traditional Trades

Manita Rai, a trainee of Aluminum Fabricator Training in Pathari, Morang, was initially hesitant about pursuing this trade until she learned about the training opportunities available for women. She applied and was selected for the program and has been training for the past two weeks. Although she feels slightly uncomfortable with heavy machinery and working at heights, she is gradually gaining confidence. After completing the training, Manita plans to work in a nearby workshop and eventually take on small contracts to further develop her skills.

Sub-component 1.3 (Decent Jobs),  under Rural Enterprise and Remittance Project "Samriddhi" is committed to promoting gender equality and increasing income opportunities for women. One of the ways it aims to achieve this is by encouraging women to participate in non-traditional trades. Women have shown enthusiasm for training in several occupations that are not traditionally associated with them. Trades like Motor Cycle Service Mechanic, mason, building electrician, aluminum fabrication, and mobile repairing are considered as non-traditional trades for women. Decent Jobs has mandated that at least 50% of trainees must be women, not just in non-traditional trades, but across all sectors. The Vocational Skills Training (VST III) running for 2023 is providing 390 hours of skills training to 13,380 unemployed youths in 34 different occupations across 11 sectors in the project area.
