IFAD Delegation's Visit to Project

August 1-2, 2023

A high-profile delegation from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Asia Pacific, led by Ms. Reehana Raza, the IFAD Asia Pacific Director, embarked on a two-day visit to Nepal to observe the progress and impact of the Rural Enterprises and Remittance Project (RERP). The delegation was comprised of portfolio advisor Mr. Liam Chicca, country director Mr. Roshan Cooke, country program analyst Mr. Kamal Gaire, and IFAD consultant Mr. Sanjeev Shrestha. The visit aimed to assess the effectiveness of the RERP in uplifting rural communities through various initiatives focused on economic and social empowerment. The delegation was accompanied by Mr. Saroj Prasad Guragain, the Project Manager of RERP, and the dedicated project team members.

During their visit, the IFAD team had the opportunity to witness the transformative changes brought about by RERP in different working areas. Their first stop was at Belhara Dhankuta, where they observed the vegetable collective marketing practice. This initiative has proven to be a game-changer for local farmers, empowering them to collectively market their produce and receive better returns, thus enhancing their economic well-being.

Next, the delegation visited the Municipal Office in Dhankuta, where they met with the mayor of the city. The meeting provided an excellent platform to discuss the project's objectives and its alignment with the local government's development priorities. The mayor expressed his appreciation for RERP's efforts in driving positive change in the region and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities. One of the highlights of the visit was interacting with the graduates under the Decent Job program at Dhankuta. The RERP's focus on skill development and employment generation has enabled young individuals to secure meaningful employment opportunities and escape the clutches of poverty, thereby fostering a sense of dignity and self-reliance among the youth.

In Sundarharaicha Morang, the IFAD delegation explored the success story of the Goat Producer Organization (PO) under RERP, which has had a remarkable impact on marginalized communities. Through this initiative, livestock management practices have significantly improved, granting better market access and leading to enhanced incomes and overall social development. Another notable outcome is the adoption of sustainable practices, such as planting fodder and forage, reducing production costs, and increasing economic gains. The visit also included partner industries where Leading to Apprenticeship Model (LAM) graduates, supported by FNCCI, have found employment, fostering a symbiotic relationship that promotes inclusive economic growth.

The visit concluded with the delegation meeting with the Project Management Office (PMO) where they expressed their admiration for the dedicated and diligent efforts of the RERP team. They recognized the project's holistic approach in addressing the multifaceted challenges faced by rural communities, aiming for complete rural economic and social empowerment. Ms. Reehana Raza, the IFAD Asia Pacific Director, commended the project's positive impact and emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between IFAD and the Government of Nepal to further enhance rural development efforts. She highlighted IFAD's commitment to supporting innovative and sustainable initiatives that uplift the lives of rural populations.

Overall, the visit of the IFAD delegation to RERP's working areas showcased the importance of investing in rural empowerment and development. Through strategic collaborations, skill development, and targeted interventions, RERP has set a commendable example of how impactful projects can drive positive change in the lives of the rural population. As RERP continues its journey, it remains a beacon of hope for rural communities striving for a better and brighter future.
